1. Can people tour the Leavenworth County prisons?

U.S.P and the U.S.D.B do not allow public tours. Special groups such as students may tour the Lansing Correctional Facility with approval from the Warden’s Office. For more information please contact the Lansing Correctional Facility at (913) 727-3235. C.C.A. allows tours for those 18 years of age and over. The tour contact is Cindy Collins (913) 727-3246.

2. Where are the Kansas Death Row inmates housed?

Male inmates sentenced to death would be housed at El Dorado Correctional Facility and female inmates would be housed at Topeka Correctional Facility. They will be transferred to the Lansing Correctional Facility shortly before their execution date.

3. Where can I find research materials about the Leavenworth County Prisons?

The Lansing Historical Museum, Carroll Mansion, Leavenworth Public Library, and the Combined Arms Research Library at Fort Leavenworth all have prison information. To visit the Combined Arms Research Library at Fort Leavenworth one will need to show photo identification at the Fort’s entrance to enter.

4. Where can I find U.S.P inmate records?

Federal inmate records from 1895 to 1952 are located at the National Archives Central Plains branch in Kansas City, Missouri (816) 268-8000. For more recent records contact the United States Penitentiary at Leavenworth (913)682-8700.

5. Where are Richard Hickock and Perry Smith buried?

They are buried in section 34 at Mount Muncie Cemetery in Lansing. Located on Highway 5 - south of the Veteran’s Administration Center - Mount Muncie Cemetery has several famous “residents” including Fred Harvey and Governor Thomas Carney.
