RESULTS NOW OFFICIAL: LANSING SALES TAX INCREASE APPROVED

Based on results provided by the Leavenworth County Clerk and approved by the County Commission, Lansing voters approved raising the local sales tax rate from 8.5 percent to 8.95 percent.

Unofficially, there were 2,164 votes cast. 1109 votes were in favor of the sales tax increase; 1053 were against. Percentages show 51.2 percent in favor, 48.6 percent against. The mail-in ballot election concluded at noon on May 16, 2017.

The Lansing City Council has designated a portion of the new sales tax revenue for upgrading Desoto Road, one of the main north/south routes through Lansing; revenue generated by the increase will also be used to pay for infrastructure improvements at Lansing parks, including Kenneth W. Bernard Community Park. Based on the most recent projections, the City will see an additional $350,000 to $400,000 per year in sales tax revenue.
